False Pretenses by Kathy Herman

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
False Pretenses
David C. Cook (March 1, 2011)
by
Kathy Herman

I've not read a lot by Kathy Herman and wasn't sure what to expect as I cracked this book open. As soon as I started turning pages I realized I'd been missing something. She's a great writer. The story was intriguing and she had me wondering for quite a while what the big mystery was. I thought I had it figured out a couple times but I was wrong. LOL.

One thing that bugged me a little was there's this secondary couple that would talk about some things that happened in their life. I got the sense that I was missing part of the story so I looked at Kathy's backlist and realized that yes, these characters have their own story. So in some ways it was nice, now I can go get the Sophie Trace books and have some great reading ahead of me, but in another way I wish I'd have known their story as I was reading this one. Overall, this was a great book. It had everything I was looking for in a suspense and then some. I'd highly recommend this to those who love good well written suspense.
I received this book for review from the publisher.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Suspense novelist Kathy Herman is very much at home in the Christian book industry, having worked five years on staff at the Christian Booksellers Association (CBA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and eleven years at Better Books Christian Center in Tyler, Texas, as product buyer/manager for the children’s department, and eventually as director of human resources.

She has conducted numerous educational seminars on children’s books at CBA Conventions in the U.S. and Canada, served a preliminary judge for the Gold Medallion Book Awards of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association , and worked as an independent product/marketing consultant to the CBA market.

Since her first novel, Tested by Fire, debuted in 2001 as a CBA national bestseller, she's added sixteen more titles to her credit, including four bestsellers: All Things Hidden, The Real Enemy, The Last Word, and The Right Call.

Kathy's husband Paul is her manager and most ardent supporter, and the former manager of the LifeWay Christian Store in Tyler, Texas. They have three grown children, five almost-perfect grandchildren, a cat named Samantha. They enjoy cruising, deep sea fishing, and birdwatching—sometimes incorporating these hobbies into one big adventure.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Zoe Broussard loves the life she and her husband Pierce have built in her beloved Louisiana hometown. She owns a thriving Cajun eatery in South Louisiana and is married to the love of her life.

But it’s about to become hell. One day, out of the blue, she receives a series of anonymous notes that sends her life into a tail spin. Five simple words, “I know what you did.” Zoe has a secret so terrible it could leave the business in shambles and tear her marriage apart. Vicious Cycle by Terri Blackstock

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Vicious Cycle
Zondervan (February 22, 2011)
by
Terri Blackstock

Okay, so I've loved Terri Blackstock since I read the Second Chances and Newpointe 911 series years ago. At that time I went back and read everything on her backlist and then made it a priority to read anything new by her. And with the exception of the Restoration Series (I couldn't get into that one for whatever reason) I've done just that. She's one of the first Christian Suspense authors I'd ever heard of. Prior to that I thought Christian fiction was all prairie romance. Which is what I cut my teeth on but I soon tired of that and wanted something edgier. I was thrilled to find someone who wrote books like what I found in the secular market but with an element of faith.

All that to say, I eagerly awaited this installment of the Intervention Series. In the first book, Intervention, we got to travel along with the Covington family as they embarked on a sometimes terrifying journey to sobriety with daughter, Emily. In true Blackstock fashion, the rehab was only a small part of the story. There was a suspense thread that kept me turning the pages long after bedtime.

In this installment, Vicious Cycle, we get the joy of seeing Emily's redemption. And along with that, Lance, Barbara's 15 year-old son finds an abandoned baby in the backseat of his car. He knows who the baby belongs to and is determined to keep her safe. The result is a suspense driven ride of baby trafficking, drugs, and even murder. Oh and Blackstock throws in a little romance for good measure.

Overall, it's a wonderful read and anyone who loves tightly woven suspense with a touch of romance will love this book!

I received this book for review from the publisher.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Terri Blackstock is a New York Times best-seller, with over six million copies sold worldwide. She has had over twenty-five years of success as a novelist. She sold her first novel at the age of twenty-five, and has had a successful career ever since.

Besides entertaining her readers, Terri tackles issues that she hopes will change lives. Her recent book, Predator, was inspired by her experiences on Facebook and Twitter, and her concern that people posted too much personal information about themselves. The book deals with an online predator who uses social networks as his playground. She hopes the book will change readers’ online habits. Her New York Times best-seller, Intervention, was inspired by her own personal struggles with a daughter on drugs. In the book, a mother hires an interventionist for her drug-addicted daughter. But on the way to treatment, the interventionist is murdered, and the daughter disappears. Barbara, the mother, sets out to search for her daughter. Terri modeled Barbara after herself, and poured many of her own emotions and experiences into that character. As a result, many families experiencing drug addiction have written to thank her for telling their story and giving them hope. Vicious Cycle, Book Two of the Intervention Series, releases February 22, 2011. She’s currently working on Book Three.

Other recent books include a stand-alone novel called Double Minds, as well as Last Light, Night Light, True Light and Dawn’s Light (from her acclaimed Restoration Series). She is also known for her popular Newpointe 911 Series and Cape Refuge Series. Terri makes her home in Mississippi, where she and her husband Ken are enjoying their empty nest after raising three children.

Terri has appeared on national television programs such as “The 700 Club” and “Home Life,” and has been a guest on numerous radio programs across the country. The story of her personal journey appears in books such as Touched By the Savior by Mike Yorkey, True Stories of Answered Prayer by Mike Nappa, Faces of Faith by John Hanna, and I Saw Him In Your Eyes by Ace Collins.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When fifteen-year-old Lance Covington finds an abandoned baby in the backseat of a car, he knows she's the newborn daughter of a meth addict he's been trying to help. But when police arrest him for kidnapping, Lance is thrust into a criminal world of baby trafficking and drug abuse.

His mother, Barbara, looks for help from Kent Harlan---the man whom she secretly, reluctantly loves and who once helped rescue her daughter from a mess of her own. Kent flies to her aid and begins the impossible work of getting Lance out of trouble, protecting a baby who has no home, and finding help for a teenage mother hiding behind her lies.

In this latest novel of suspense and family loyalty, bestselling author Terri Blackstock offers a harrowing look at drug addiction, human trafficking, and the devastating choices that can change lives forever.

In the Shadow of Evil...Robin Caroll

Today we bring you, In the Shadow of Evil by Robin Caroll. This is the first full length book I've read by the author. She also has a book, Deliver us From Evil focusing on human trafficking that I'm really excited to pick up.

I've read most of her short romantic suspense books but was eager to see how she'd developed as she moved to the full trade length books. Wow. She's always been a great writer, but with this she had the room she needed to develop the story to the fullest. I loved her well developed, yet flawed characters and I have to say she made me want to visit her beloved Bayou. I loved how relevant the book was and how it gave us a glimpse of what could happen in the aftermath of Katrina. A problem I never gave a thought too.

Overall, I loved it. It was an enjoyable book to read and I'd suggest it to anyone that loves great suspense with a touch of romance. Similar to Terri Blackstock.

I received this book for review from the publisher.

Sworn to Protect...DiAnn Mills

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

Sworn To Protect
Tyndale House (April 2010)

by
DiAnn Mills
Sabrina Here: I read this book in two sittings. As soon as it was in my hot little hands I started reading. I have long loved Diann Mills' books and figured this would be no exception. I was right. The book is filled with action, drama, some subtle romance, and I have to say after I read it I felt educated on what's going on in our boarder towns. She must have researched extensively for this one.
Overall, Mills did a fantastic job with this one and I can't wait to read book three. I highly recommend Sworn to Protect.
p.s. one little thing that bugged me was in the book the character
had blonde hair and the cover is clearly a brunette. I hate when the editing process
misses those little things. But really, it's a great book so who cares...

Dead Reckoning by Ronie Kendig

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

Dead Reckoning

Abingdon Press (March 1, 2010)

by

Ronie Kendig
I recently finished Ronie Kendig’s new release, Dead Reckoning. From the first page I was hooked. This is a smart, action packed suspense that will keep you turning those pages until the very end.

I was impressed with Kendig’s ability to write so convincingly about an area and a subject matter that is so foreign and out of the realm of understanding for most average Americans. I really felt she’d done a ton of homework and research to make this a truly believable read.

The story was so unique with the terrorist plots and the foreign locale it was hard to put down. I also loved the romance. I found myself really drawn to these characters and so wanted them to end up together.

One little thing worth mentioning—I didn’t love the cover. Because I’m someone who sadly judges books by covers, I might not have picked this one up by the cover alone. That would have been a mistake. I'd have missed out on a great adventure. So, if you are like me, do not judge this book by the cover!

All and all a tremendous debut novel for Kendig. Can’t wait to read more by this great author!
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Ronie has been married since 1990 to a man who can easily be defined in classic terms as a hero. She has four beautiful children. Her eldest daughter is 16 this year, her second daughter will be 13, and her twin boys are 10. After having four children, she finally finished her degree in December 2006. She now has a B.S. in Psychology through Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Getting her degree is a huge triumph for both her and her family--they survived!

This degree has also given her a fabulous perspective on her characters

and how to not only make them deeper, stronger, but to make them realistic and know how they'll respond to each situation. Her debut novel, Dead Reckoning released March 2010 from Abingdon Press. And her Discarded Heroes series begins in July from Barbour with the first book entitled Nightshade.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Underwater archeologist Shiloh Blake is consumed with passion for the water and inflamed at the injustices of life. When her first large-scale dig traps her in the middle of an international nuclear arms clash, she flees for her life.

When she spots a man trailing her, the questions are, Who is he? And how is he always one step ahead? Is the man trailing her an enemy or a protector sent by her CIA father?

Reece Jaxon is a former Navy SEAL and now serves his country as a spy. His life is entangled by the beguiling Shiloh Blake as he hunts down the sources to a nuclear dead drop in the Arabian Sea near Mumbai, India. The only way to end this nightmare and prevent a nuclear meltdown is to join forces with Reece. Will Shiloh violate her vow to never become involved in her father's web of intrigue and mystery? Will she reconcile with her past and with him? Will she allow God to help her throught this ordeal of danger, mistrust and uncertainty?

Intervention by Terri Blackstock

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

Intervention

Zondervan (September 22, 2009)

by

Terri Blackstock

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Terri Blackstock’s books have sold six million copies worldwide. Her suspense novels often debut at number one on the Christian fiction best-seller lists, and True Light, published last year, was number one of all Christian books—fiction and non-fiction. Blackstock has had twenty-five years of success as a novelist.

In 1994 Blackstock was writing for publishers such as HarperCollins, Harlequin and Silhouette, when a spiritual awakening drew her into the Christian market. Since that time, she’s written over thirty Christian titles, in addition to the thirty-two she had in the secular market. Her most recent books are the four in her acclaimed Restoration Series, which includes Last Light, Night Light, True Light and Dawn’s Light. She is also known for her popular Newpointe 911 and Cape Refuge Series.

In addition to her suspense novels, she has written a number of novels in the women’s fiction genre, including Covenant Child, which was chosen as one of the first Women of Faith novels, and her Seasons Series written with Beverly LaHaye, wife of Tim LaHaye.

Blackstock has won the Retailer’s Choice Award and has appeared on national television programs such as The 700 Club, Home Life, and At Home Live with Chuck and Jenny. She has been a guest on numerous radio programs across the country and the subject of countless articles. The story of her personal journey appears in books such as Touched By the Savior by Mike Yorkey, True Stories of Answered Prayer by Mike Nappa, Faces of Faith by John Hanna, and I Saw Him In Your Eyes by Ace Collins.

MY REVIEW

I received my copy of Intervention on a Friday afternoon. I started to crack open the book that night and thought better of it. I knew from experience that if I started the book, a book written by Terri Blackstock, it was likely that I might not be able to put it down for the evening. :)

I had an unusually quiet Saturday. No football game to attend, so I started the book that afternoon around 12:30. By 10:30 that night, I’d finished it. Or rather devoured it.

The story starts with an intervention. Eighteen-year-old Emily Covington’s widowed mother Barbara is trying once again to save her daughter from herself and a devastating addiction. The intervention starts as one would expect. Emily is angry and refusing to go to the treatment center that her mother put a second mortgage on her home just so Emily could attend.

With the help of the interventionist, Emily finally decides to go. Giving the impression that Emily is ready for a change.

Imagine Barbara’s surprise when on the way to the center, Emily disappears and her interventionist is found dead at the airport.

Positive that her daughter is not a killer, Barbara and her 14 year old son, Lance are on the first flight, determined to find Emily before Detective Kent Harlan can arrest her for the murder.

One thing that drove me a little crazy was Barbara’s inability to see how she was interfering with the investigation. I wanted to shake her and say, quit making more work for the detectives so they can concentrate on finding Emily. However, after I finished the book I thought about it for a moment and I realized Barbara probably reacted like many parents would. She was prepared to do anything to save her daughter and no detective or cop was going to stop her. You have to admire that spunk and determination.

I won’t spoil the end for anyone, but let me say that Blackstock delivers with this one. Suspense ran rampant. Pick up your copy. You won’t be disappointed.

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

CRIMSON EVE
(Zondervan October 30, 2007)
by

Brandilyn Collins

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Brandilyn Collins is a best-selling novelist known for her trademark Seatbelt Suspense™. These harrowing crime thrillers have earned her the tagline “Don’t forget to b r e a t h e…® ” She’s so well known in the industry there’s actually a club for her non-readers. That’s right. The Big Honkin’ Chickens Club (BHCC) members are proud of the fact that they’re too wimpy to read Brandilyn’s intense fiction. Now and then one of them tries. Bribing works pretty well. (Just ask Deb Raney.) Somehow they live to tell the tale.

Brandilyn writes for Zondervan, the Christian division of HarperCollins Publishers, and is currently at work on her 17th book. Her first book, A Question of Innocence, was a true crime published by Avon in 1995. Its promotion landed her on local and national TV and radio, including the Phil Donahue and Leeza talk shows.

She’s also known for her distinctive book on fiction-writing techniques, Getting Into Character: Seven Secrets a Novelist Can Learn From Actors (John Wiley & Sons), and often teaches at writers conferences. Brandilyn blogs at Forensics and Faith.

Visit her website to read the first chapters of all her books.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Carla stared at the gun and David Thornby—or whatever his name was. Her mind split in two, one side pleading this was some sick joke, the other screaming it was all too real.

“Please. You must have the wrong person. There’s no reason for someone to want me dead. I don’t have any enemies.”

“Then you’d best rethink your friends.”
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Realtor Carla Radling shows an “English gentleman” a lakeside estate—and finds herself facing a gun. Who has hired this assassin to kill her, and why?

Forced on the run, Carla must uncover the scathing secrets of her past. Secrets that could destroy some very powerful people...

Brandilyn Collins fans and reviewers are saying Crimson Eve is her best book yet:

“Collins tops herself by creating a suspenseful nonstop thrill ride … Truly the best Christian Fiction suspense title so far this year.”
– Library Journal, starred review

“Crimson Eve is Collins at her very best. It left me feeling as if I’d climbed Mount Everest without oxygen … I didn’t think Brandilyn could outdo herself after reading Coral Moon. She did.”
–TitleTrakk.com

“I’ve never edited a more tightly crafted, deftly woven, compellingly written book.” –a Crimson Eve editor, with 20 years experience

“This is your best book! I could not stop reading!” – one of many readers with similar responses

Read about Violet Dawn and Coral Moon, books one and two in the Kanner Lake series.

Sabrina Here:
Okay, y'all. I know it's no surprise that I loved this book. It was a fast paced ride from page one. I literally started reading it late afternoon and stayed up late finishing it up the same night. It might have something to do with the fact I was so excited for this particular story to be released. The story is about Carla Radling, Kanner Lake Realtor. Carla is the character Lynette Sowell and myself wrote for on the Scenes and Beans Blog. So Carla's story was close to my heart. :)
I can't think of anything to say about Brandilyn's writing that hasn't been said a dozen times...she writes a tightly paced story that keeps you guessing until the end. It's no wonder she has to remind readers to BREATHE. LOL. Anyway, this was one of my favorite books of hers and I hope you'll run out and get your copy. And if you've never read anything by Brandilyn, which I find unbelievable, here's something cool:
Do you know someone who’s never read a Brandilyn Collins novel? Surely no such person exists. However, should you scrounge up such a friend—someone who enjoys suspense—here’s a special offer from Brandilyn. Be among the first 50 people between now and October 21, 2007 to e-mail her assistant at gayle.brandilyncollins@gmail.com with the person’s name, e-mail address and street address. (Due to exorbitant overseas mailing costs, United States residents only, please).

A signed copy of Crimson Eve will be sent to your friend—free—along with an e-mail from Brandilyn announcing the book is on its way, courtesy of you. (Don’t worry. Brandilyn won’t spam these email addresses. She just wants your friend to know who to thank.) No worries that this story is third in the Kanner Lake series. Each book stands alone. Brandilyn is convinced your friend will so love Crimson Eve, he/she will surely reciprocate with expensive chocolate.

LOVE INSPIRED WEDNESDAY... Valley of Shadows by Shirlee McCoy

Since I'm targeting the LI line of Steeple Hill I thought it would be a wise decision to read as much of their current line as possible to not only see what the published authors did right, but to get a feel for what the editors are obviously looking for. Therefore, I'm going to try and post a review of an LI book every Wednesday. If you've never read an LI book you're in for a treat. The books are small enough that you can read them in one sitting or come back to over a couple days time. There's always a good balance between the romance and spiritual thread and in the suspense line there is always a fast paced energetic plot to keep you interested.

This week I'm reviewing Valley of Shadows by Shirlee McCoy. I've long been a fan of Shirlee's not just because of her writing. She's a kind hearted woman who is willing to share her personal experience in the publishing world and offer advice when needed. I've made her blog one of my must read blogs just because she's always sharing stuff about the industry or the writing process.

I took Valley of Shadows with me on our vacation along with about 4 other books thinking I'd have all kinds of time to read. Ha Ha. Ever been on vacation with an 8 year old boy who doesn't understand the concept of relaxation? LOL. We were too busy to even sit and read around the pool. So on Sunday evening with my son and husband already asleep I sat up and read the entire book until about 2:00 a.m. I kept thinking, one more page, just one more page. LOL. It was that good.

Here's the back cover blurb:

UNMASKING THE TRUTH

Working deep undercover was dangerous. Mercenary turned DEA agent Hawke Morran found out just how dangerous when his cover was suddenly blown. His life hung in the balance--until a mysterious woman saved him from certain death.

Hawke was a lone wolf--used to bringing down the bad guys by himself. Without a partner. Yet now he and Miranda Shelton were running for their lives, desperate to uncover the identity of Hawke's betrayor. Journeying from the mountains of Lakeview, Virginia, to the valleys of Thailand, Hawke vowed to protect the lovely Christian woman in his care.

Sabrina here, the story starts out with Miranda grieving the loss of a loved one. As she's contemplating her life and how things will change, she's drawn into a murderous plot to kill a masked and bound man that she's never met. She doesn't even hesitate to help him without thought or worry for herself.

Once she helps him she finds herself unable to go home and lead the "normal" life she's lived. She's on the run and the only one she can trust is Hawke Morran.

Shirlee does well writing living breathing characters. I felt drawn to Miranda immediately. I could sympathize with her loss and even her questioning her purpose in life. I also liked Hawke quit a bit. (who wouldn't?) LOL. He came across as strong both physically and morally. I especially enjoyed the traveling to another country and could visualize the scenes as they played out. I won't give anymore away because it would spoil the story for you, but it was a well written book that kept me interested until the last page. Overall, I felt like I had been along for the journey.

Readers of McCoy will find this as enjoyable as all her other books. They'll also enjoy the cameo appearance of Noah Stone from Even in the Darkness. Overall, two thumbs up! ;) Pick up Valley of Shadows by Shirlee McCoy today.

The Reluctant Runaway by Jill Elizabeth Nelson

Stolen Indian artifacts. . .

A dead museum guard. . .

A missing wife and mom. . .

A baby in mortal danger. . .

Museum security expert Desiree Jacobs and FBI agent Tony Lucano scramble to unearth the horrifying secret that links every incident. The investigation thrusts them into the path of something dark and sinister.

Something that craves blood sacrifice.

From the high society of the U.S. capital to the streets of Desi's beloved Boston to the mountain desert of New Mexico, Desi and Tony must thwart forces of darkness—relying on God’s guidance and strength—to save a young woman and her baby from a villain more desperate than they can imagine.

I received The Reluctant Runaway several weeks ago and have been dying to do this interview with the author Jill Elizabeth Nelson. Some of you will remember that I loved Jill's debut novel Reluctant Burglar. I thought it had a little bit of everything. Intrigue, suspense, romance, drama. I would have been hard pressed to find any fault at all with the book. So when I heard about the second book I wondered if it would hold up to the praise of book one. You know how sequel movies are never as good as the original and almost always leave you feeling dissatisfied???

I can honestly say Jill blew that theory out of the water. Again, her book has it all. This time she even threw in some cult like behavior for good measure. ;) She obviously did her homework and researched the locations in the book very well. I felt like I could feel the desert rock under foot as Desi made her way through the rough terrain.

The romance between Desi and Tony doesn't leave me disappointed either. I love the chemistry of these characters. I still stand by my first opinion of this series and say that these characters could do justice to a T.V. series. I know I'd watch it.

After you read the short interview with Jill, please leave me a comment about what you thought of the first book or why you'd like to read this book and I'll draw from the names for a free copy of The Reluctant Runaway. ;)

Hey, Jill. I thought we’d go for a more fun, quirky interview…since we already did the mature/serious one. back in October. LOL.

I have to reiterate how much I enjoyed both the Reluctant Burglar and the Reluctant Runaway. Last year I thought RB was one of the best books I read and I mean that. (I still say it would make a killer TV. series)You can bet Reluctant Runaway will make the top ten list next year. ;)

Anyway, tell me something about yourself that readers or even friends might be surprised to learn about you.

JN: When I get to laughing really hard, I start a high-pitched squeak sound like Mutley from those old Dastardly and Mutley cartoons. My family thinks it’s so funny they laugh at me . . . not with me.

Isn't family fabulous? LOL. Is there any of “Jill” in your main character Desi?

JN: Only a smidgeon. Desi can be an I’ll-do-it-myself control freak, and I have to admit I can be somewhat the same way. All right. A lot the same way. The Lord and I are working on this. You could say I’m a “recovering Desiree.” LOL.

On the other hand, I only wish I could invent the clever repartee that she does on the fly. Generally, the smooth response doesn’t occur to me until after the fact. At least, we both love classic films.

I, too, would love to be as smooth and efficient as Desi. Now, if you could be doing anything right now…what would it be?

JN: Sitting in a lawn chair in a wooded area on a sunny, warm day, feeling the breeze on my face, and listening to the birds sing while I invent stories on my laptop. Nothing compares to that peaceful environment to facilitate concentration and creativity.

Sounds relaxing. What’s something you’ve always wanted to do? Any skydiving or bungee jumping in your future?

JN: My daughter bungee jumps. She can have it! Gill Grissom (CSI) rides roller coasters. He can keep those. And I prefer to stay in my seat in an airplane, thank you very much. But I would like to have unlimited funds and endless vacation time to travel the world on mission trips. Last year, my husband and I were in Thailand for a couple of weeks. Next year, we hope to go to the Philippines and Thailand. I’d like to do lots more.

What would be the perfect date night with your husband…pizza…fine dining…walk in the park…etc…

JN: A delicious meal at a fine seafood restaurant, followed by an exciting action movie. (I’m not a chic flick kind of gal.) On the other hand, a nice walk on a balmy day then dill pickle chips and a movie at home is just great, too. Of course, my husband doesn’t care for my kind of chips. He eats Lays au gratin.

Are you still working full time? Or are you writing full time now?

JN: When I’m not at my laptop, I work forty plus hour weeks as a housing manager at a senior housing complex. So you could easily say I hold down two full time jobs. Good thing I love them both!

Share something new that you’ve learned recently about the writing/publishing world.

JN: The more things change, the more things stay the same. Multnomah just went through a major change in being purchased by Random House. The absorption into a larger company and merger with Waterbrook (RH’s other inspie imprint) had its bumpy moments, but not as much as one might think. A number of processes changed as a result, and yet I find preparing a manuscript for publication the same hurry-up-and-wait business it’s always been—flurries of activity, followed by waiting for someone else to get their part done.

I adore your book covers. Very appealing and eye catching. Did you have input on the final design?

JN: I love my publisher. They give me input on everything. Their in-house cover designer came up with several options—using live models, by the way—then I got to pick what I liked best. With Reluctant Runaway, I selected my favorite and made a suggestion for a slight change, which they went with right away. I’m thrilled with my covers! I’m double-thrilled with the preview I’ve already had of the cover for my January release, Reluctant Smuggler.

Feel free to share anything about the book or future projects.

JN: Reluctant Runaway was such a fun book to write because I got to actually visit Albuquerque, where much of the action takes place. I so enjoyed the high desert topography and climate. The upcoming January release, Reluctant Smuggler, is special because . . . well, let’s just say we have some pretty awesome developments for Desi and Tony.

Be sure to stop by my web site for lots of great changes and updates since the release of Reluctant Runaway. My Stealth and Wealth page has a new art IQ contest posted for a monthly chance to win a signed copy. Also, my books page not only has excerpts to read, but a book trailer to view. Thanks, Jill. I appreciate you taking the time for this. And I can’t wait for book three. ;)

JN: THANKS, SABRINA!

There you have it folks. Now leave those comments for a chance to win a gently used copy of this fab book. ;) And be sure to check back at the end of the week as I'll be interviewing and giving away a copy of Rachel Haucks new book. Diva NashVegas. ;)

Free Copy of Coral Moon

Hey all, I waited a couple days to announce this because I was too busy absorbing all I could from Brandilyn's well crafted suspense, Coral Moon.

Now that I'm completely finished with the book, as much as I hate to part with it...I'm giving away my copy of Coral Moon. All you have to do is leave me a comment and tell me why you want to read the book or mention a favorite Brandilyn book and I'll put your name in a hat and draw the winner Tuesday.

Warning...this is not a book for the faint of heart. Sigh. It's extremely suspenseful and delves into spiritual warfare. So if you're a member of the BHCC this is not the book for you. Otherwise, you're going to love it. ;)

Read the last post for a description of the book.

CORAL MOON BY BRANDILYN COLLINS

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Brandilyn Collins is the bestselling author of Violet Dawn, Web Of Lies, Dead of Night, Stain of Guilt, Brink of Death, and Eyes of Elisha just to name a few.

Brandilyn and her family divide their time between the California Bay Area and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

She also maintains an informative blog called Forensics and Faith where she daily dispenses wisdom on writing, life, and the Christian book industry.

THE BOOK:

The figure remained still as stone. Leslie couldn't even detect a breath.

Spider fingers teased the back of her neck.

Leslie's feet rooted to the pavement. She dropped her gaze to the driveway, seeking...what? Spatters of blood? Footprints? She saw nothing. Honed through her recent coverage of crime scene evidence, the testimony as last month's trial, the reporter in Leslie spewed warnings: Notice everything, touch nothing...

Leslie Brymes hurries out to her car on a typical workday morning...and discovers a dead body inside.

Why was the corpse left for her to find? And what is the meaning of the message pinned to its chest?

In Coral Moon, the senseless murder of a beloved Kanner Lake citizen spirals the small Idaho town into a terrifying glimpse of spiritual forces beyond our world. What appears true seems impossible.

OR IS IT?

And as Brandilyn would say...

Everyone knows I love a good suspense book. That's why Brandilyn has become one of my all-time favorite writers. Being a reviewer is fun, but when you get a book by a favorite writer, it's like setting down with an old friend.

In Coral Moon, Collins does exactly what's expected of a writer of her caliber. She writes a wonderfully crafted, suspenseful story that pulls you in from the first page. Look at this excerpt from the first chapter. I know this is a long post, but I wanted to show you how a suspense book should start.

Kill tonight—or die.

The words burned, hot acid eating through his eyes, his brain. Right down to his soul.

Only a crazy person would obey.

He slapped both hands to his ears, squeezed hard against his head. Screwed his eyes shut. He hung there, cut off from the world, snagged on the life sounds of his body. The whoosh of breath, the beat of his heart.

The words boiled.

His skull hurt. He pulled his hands away, let them fall. The kitchen spun. He dropped into a chair, bent forward, and breathed deeply until the dizziness passed.

He sat up, looked again to the table.

The note lay upon the unfolded Kanner Lake Times newspaper, each word horrific against the backdrop of a coral crescent moon.

How did they get in here?

What a stupid question. As if they lacked stealth, as if mere walls and locked entrances could keep them out. He’d been down the hall in the bedroom watching TV, door wide open, yet had heard nothing. Hadn’t even sensed their presence as he pushed off the bed and walked to the kitchen for some water.

A chill blew over his feet.

His eyes bugged, then scanned the room. Over white refrigerator and oak cabinets, wiped-down counters and empty sink. To the threshold of the kitchen and into the hallway. There his gaze lingered as the chill worked up to his ankles.

It had to be coming from the front of the house.

His skin oozed sweat, a web of sticky fear spinning down over him. Trembling, he pulled himself out of the chair. He clung to the smooth table edge, ensuring his balance. Then, heart beating in his throat, he forced himself across the floor, around the corner, and toward the front door.

It hung open a few inches.

They were taunting him.

He approached, hands up and fingers spread, as if pushing through phantoms. Sounds of the night wafted on the frigid air—the rustle of breeze through tree limbs, distant car tires singing against pavement. He reached the door, peered around it, knowing he was a fool to seek sign of them. The air smelled crisp, tanged with the purity of pine trees. The last vestiges of snow dusted his porch, bearing the tracks of his footprints alone.

He closed the door and locked it. As if that would do any good. He sagged against the wall, defeated and sick. How stupid to think they would leave him in peace. Hadn’t he seen this coming? All the events of the last few months . . .

Shoulders drawn, he made his way back to the kitchen and his inevitable fate. Each footstep drew him away from the life he’d built, reasoning and confidence seeping from him like blood from a fatal wound. His conscience pulsed at what he had to do.

The message sat on his table, an executioner beckoning victim to the noose. He fell into the chair, wiped his forehead with the back of his hand. He read the words, fresh nausea rising in his stomach. No misunderstanding their commands. They had a chess score to settle. He was their pawn.

He pushed back against the chair, arms crossed and hugging himself, the way he used to do as a boy. Dully, he stared at the window, seeing only his own pitiable reflection. For a long time he watched himself, first transfixed in fright, then with the evolving expression of self-preservation.

If he just did this one thing, his debt would be paid. They’d leave him alone.

For another hour...two…he sat, forcing down the queasiness as he thought through dozens of details. How he should do it. What could go wrong.

By the time he rose near midnight, he’d laid his plans.

Gathering the necessary items, shrugging on a coat, he slipped out into the cold and soulless night.
