False Pretenses by Kathy Herman

I've not read a lot by Kathy Herman and wasn't sure what to expect as I cracked this book open. As soon as I started turning pages I realized I'd been missing something. She's a great writer. The story was intriguing and she had me wondering for quite a while what the big mystery was. I thought I had it figured out a couple times but I was wrong. LOL.

One thing that bugged me a little was there's this secondary couple that would talk about some things that happened in their life. I got the sense that I was missing part of the story so I looked at Kathy's backlist and realized that yes, these characters have their own story. So in some ways it was nice, now I can go get the Sophie Trace books and have some great reading ahead of me, but in another way I wish I'd have known their story as I was reading this one. Overall, this was a great book. It had everything I was looking for in a suspense and then some. I'd highly recommend this to those who love good well written suspense.

Criminals with bad taste...

So this morning I go out to the car to find that it's been ransacked. I'd left it out of the garage because I'm lazy and hate pulling out. I know...really lazy, but it's just so much easier to start it and go. Sigh, I know, I digress--so the thief didn't even pretend to hide his tracks, my papers and registration and all kinds of junk was strewn about. My console and glovebox emptied.

I didn't have a lot in there. They got our cell charger, my son's Nintendo DS charger, a cd or two and maybe some loose change. My neighbor faired a little worse. But here's where my crazy brain looses it a little. The thing that irritated me the most, they didnt' take my Train CD. Nope. Well that and our son's Lactaid. I guess the crook wasn't lactose intollerant, I get that, but um, what does that say about my taste in music? Is it me or do the thieves of today have poor taste.

And why do I care? LOL. I should be happy that they didnt' take it. My husband thinks it's hillarious seeing as how he can't stand Train.

On a serious note, it does creep me out to think some creepy guy was snooping through my stuff. I can't imagine how a home invasion leaves the victims feeling.

Vicious Cycle by Terri Blackstock

Okay, so I've loved Terri Blackstock since I read the Second Chances and Newpointe 911 series years ago. At that time I went back and read everything on her backlist and then made it a priority to read anything new by her. And with the exception of the Restoration Series (I couldn't get into that one for whatever reason) I've done just that. She's one of the first Christian Suspense authors I'd ever heard of. Prior to that I thought Christian fiction was all prairie romance. Which is what I cut my teeth on but I soon tired of that and wanted something edgier. I was thrilled to find someone who wrote books like what I found in the secular market but with an element of faith.

All that to say, I eagerly awaited this installment of the Intervention Series. In the first book, Intervention, we got to travel along with the Covington family as they embarked on a sometimes terrifying journey to sobriety with daughter, Emily. In true Blackstock fashion, the rehab was only a small part of the story. There was a suspense thread that kept me turning the pages long after bedtime.

In this installment, Vicious Cycle, we get the joy of seeing Emily's redemption. And along with that, Lance, Barbara's 15 year-old son finds an abandoned baby in the backseat of his car. He knows who the baby belongs to and is determined to keep her safe. The result is a suspense driven ride of baby trafficking, drugs, and even murder. Oh and Blackstock throws in a little romance for good measure.

Overall, it's a wonderful read and anyone who loves tightly woven suspense with a touch of romance will love this book!

I'm in the middle of this book now. I'm already impressed with the writing and intrigued by the story line. Having watched this family on Extreme Home Makeover and knowing a little bit about their journey I can see bits of them here. In the Shadow of Evil...Robin Caroll

Today we bring you, In the Shadow of Evil by Robin Caroll. This is the first full length book I've read by the author. She also has a book, Deliver us From Evil focusing on human trafficking that I'm really excited to pick up.

I've read most of her short romantic suspense books but was eager to see how she'd developed as she moved to the full trade length books. Wow. She's always been a great writer, but with this she had the room she needed to develop the story to the fullest. I loved her well developed, yet flawed characters and I have to say she made me want to visit her beloved Bayou. I loved how relevant the book was and how it gave us a glimpse of what could happen in the aftermath of Katrina. A problem I never gave a thought too.

Overall, I loved it. It was an enjoyable book to read and I'd suggest it to anyone that loves great suspense with a touch of romance. Similar to Terri Blackstock.

While I write contemporary fiction, I love to lose myself in a good historical. There's something relaxing about reading about another time and place. Especially when the writer is as gifted as Tracie Peterson. I'd read book one in this series, Embers of Love and was anxiously awaiting this installment. When I first started the book there was a traumatic incident that was very hard to read. I struggled getting into the story for a little bit just because of the heaviness. However, the story soon picked up and I once again found myself turning pages. Overall, I can't wait for book three and would highly suggest this series to anyone looking for a great historical read!

Chris Medina - What Are Words

When Chris Medina first auditioned for American Idol I, like most people watching, felt such heartbreak for his story. For all he's lost and for the life that he and his precious fiance should have had together. If you haven't heard about him, look him up.

His decision to stand by Julianna during this time, when most young men would eventually leave to pursue other women, is so remarkable to me. And then to listen to the words of this song, so appropriate for their love story...you have to watch it.

As a mother of a son I can't help but admire this young man and his love and respect for this woman and the commitment he made to her. I hope you'll listen to his new single and better yet, go buy it on Itunes. I heard that a large portion of his proceeds is going into Julianna's recovery fund. I hope he has enough success to help their situation but not so much that it changes him.

Save the Date by Jenny B. Jones

Though she’s written numerous young adult books, Just Between You and Me was the first time I was introduced to Jones as a writer. I’d heard of her success in the YA market but wasn’t sure what to expect. I loved that book. It was funny, yet had some deep family drama that drew me in immediately.

So when I received Save the Date to review I was already looking forward to the book. And boy did it deliver. I read the book in one day. One. Day. And I’m a busy woman. LOL. I couldn’t put it down. It was such a wonderful blend of romance and comedy that I never wanted it to end. In fact, that would be my only complaint. Jenny B. Jones needs to write faster. Faster I say. I need more books by this woman and fast. :)

The story centers around sometimes klutzy Lucy Wiltshire and former NFL hunk Alex Sinclair. Alex is running for congress to make a difference and Lucy runs a home for young women that have aged out of the foster system. Both need each other to keep their dream going so they partner in a deceptive, yet, delicious, plan to get what they both want. Nobody should get hurt. All Lucy has to do is portray Alex’s fiancé during his campaign. It will give Alex the credibility of a levelheaded family man and in return, Lucy will get the money she so desperately needs to save her home for girls. It’s foolproof. Until love enters the equation.

This book was fabulous. My favorite part was the bantering back and forth between Alex and Lucy. The dialogue was so smart and funny I found myself laughing along. Jones made these characters so real, by the end of the book I wanted to go to Charleston and meet them. I dreaded turning the last page, not because the writer didn’t do a great job wrapping up the story, but because I never wanted it to end.

If you love smart and funny romantic comedy, you’ll love Save the Date by Jenny B. Jones.

If anybody is still reading this blog and takes the time to comment I might be inclined to draw a name for a copy of this book. That's a big deal considering how much I love this book. The Ramblings of an Exhausted Mother...Advice not needed at this time...

Do you know someone who loves to give advice? Don’t we all? I love how people think because they’ve been a parent they know exactly what’s wrong with your child. They can look at the situation for all of five minutes and yep—they have diagnosed what’s wrong and they’re going to tell you how to fix the problem.
Come on, truthfully, haven’t we all given advice? I know I have. And advice from those that understand or have knowledge of the situation is awesome. I can’t tell you how I covet the advice and prayers of those that understand what goes on in our home. I especially love talking to other mothers that have parented children that were different. They get it. They know what it’s like to be in my shoes.

Here’s where I get a little sassy. :) What I don’t need is Susie Patootie who’s raised two beautiful children who are perfect in every way telling me what I’ve done wrong. Not when she has no idea who I am or what kind of mother I am. Sounds prideful I know, but stay with me.

Maybe I’m bitter from when our doctor kept telling me Tanner was fine, just love him. I can’t tell you how many times I left that office in tears. I would go home thinking it was me. I must be expecting too much. Maybe I’m over thinking things. Until other professionals starting calling me and telling me they needed to talk about Tanner. Sunday school teachers. Preschool teachers. Other moms that noticed things and in a loving way wanted to share what they’d observed in comparison to the children they’d raised.

Finally, my sister in law who heard about something called Aspergers and ordered me a book so I could read it. The book that changed the way I parent my son. I learned that by parenting him differently, he would be fine. He just saw the world in a little different way. And it was my job to help him figure the world out in a way that made sense to him.

Tanner’s almost 12 and he’s doing so much better. He knows how to convey to me when he’s anxious better than he used to. I still have days where I sit in my room for five minutes and have a good meltdown. But most days are pretty good. One of the things I’m most thankful for is that Tanner is now able to walk down the Asian aisle at the supermarket and not have to pull out the sack he carries everywhere and vomit. (That was a rough couple of years) Now he just looks toward the ceiling and walks really fast. Progress. It’s fabulous.

Still, to this day, I get a lot of well-meaning, though hurtful, advice. I can remember my sister in law, who I love dearly, telling me that her kids are to clean their dinner plate and not complain. So when my son was little I think she thought I was being soft on him when I’d let him get by without eating what was on his plate. As if that was an easy decision. Not something I’d learned the hard way. That if I forced him to eat something he would put it in his mouth and vomit all over the table. Hmmm, didn’t seem as worth it at that point.

So one day he’s staying at her house and she asked what he would eat. I told her grilled cheese. That evening she calls me in a tizzy.

“He won’t eat and he’s freaking out.”

“Freaking out. ” (Hmmm, that doesn’t sound at all like him) “What’s going on?”

“He’s crying and begging me not to make him eat. Please. I don’t eat that. Promise I won’t have to eat that. Please. Please Ninny, etc...”

Yep, sounds like an evening at our house. “What did you make?”

“Toasted cheese sandwiches.”

“Is that what you called them?”

A moment of silence then, “Well, yeah.”

“There’s your problem. He doesn’t eat toasted cheese. He eats grilled cheese.”

“But I make them just like you and you said-”

“I said he eats grilled cheese, not toasted cheese. You will never convince him now that your sandwich is the same as mine not even if you show him how you make it. You called it toasted cheese and that’s not what he eats.”

I hate to admit that I was laughing inside. Not for my son who as she puts it was “freaking out” but for the sheer joy that someone finally saw what it was like in our house. It’s easy to give advice as if you know exactly what’s going on, but you don’t. Not until you’ve lived with a child who sees the world differently can you fully understand how exhausting and how constant it is. How everything you do has to be just so or your whole day will be ruined. Just like that. Now she knows what he’ll eat and that’s all she makes him when we visit. Now who’s the softie? No more meltdowns for her.

I’m not at all saying you should cater to your children or never push them outside their comfort zone. I’m just saying all kids are not alike; so quit putting them all in the same boat. And quit giving advice when you don’t know what you’re talking about. It hurts. It damages.

Instead, just listen to those exhausted looking mothers. Hear what they're saying. Say something kind to her. And if you really have something worth saying, say it. But be slow to judge her parenting skills. You have no idea what it’s like to walk in her shoes.

Another Dawn by Kathryn Cushman

My Review: Kathryn Cushman does not disappoint in her fourth book, Another Dawn. Having read her other three offerings, I wasn’t surprised that I enjoyed this one. It’s the classic women’s fiction book. Lots of family drama and heartache that keeps you turning pages well into the night.


There’s an issue in the book that could be controversial and I found myself wondering what the author’s stance was. However, it didn’t matter. She pulled it off wonderfully.

If you enjoy good family drama with a lot of soul searching, you’ll love Another Dawn.

My Review:

After reading Nightshade, I eagerly anticipated the release of Digitalis. Having enjoyed Nightshade so much and loving the concept of the Discarded Heroes series, I wondered if Digitalis would stand up to my expectations. Would the characters be as real? The story as action packed and suspenseful? Could Kendig keep my interest going in this story of elite ex-military men saving the world from all kinds of unknown evil? Uh, yes!

This story was even better than the first in the series. I fell in love with Colton “Cowboy” Neeley and his dedication to those he loves. He’s an obvious hero with all the baggage that comes with the job. Emotionally traumatized by the deadly missions he’s been a part of, he wonders if he’ll ever get past debilitating flashbacks.

He’s a single father, but is interested in a beautiful young woman he knows virtually nothing about. Piper Blum is every bit as intriguing as Neeley’s character. Her life appears mundane, but we soon find out she’s on the run from someone. Or something. Out of necessity, she turns to Colton for help. An unfortunate set of circumstances follows, tearing them apart before they even have a chance at happiness.

Kendig is a powerful writer as she takes us on the journey of healing and forgiveness. A very satisfying ending leaves us yearning for the next book in the series.

This series, while edgier and more current, is reminiscent of Dee Henderson’s Uncommon Heroes series. If you love action packed suspense with a great romance, then you’re going to love this book!

Ronie has been married since 1990 to a man who can easily be defined in classic terms as a hero. She has four beautiful children. Her eldest daughter is 16 this year, her second daughter will be 13, and her twin boys are 10. After having four children, she finally finished her degree in December 2006. She now has a B.S. in Psychology through Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Getting her degree is a huge triumph for both her and her family--they survived!!

I'm about 2/3 finished with this book and I must say, C.S. Lakin is a remarkable writer. I'm especially enjoying the way Lakin pulls you into the story with detailed scenes so well written I found tears in my eyes on more than one occasion.

The loss and tragedy conveyed in this book is very heavy. It's not a feel good book by any means. If you're someone who likes to be captured in the lives of the characters, even during a very tragic time, then you'll love this book. The emotions are very raw and extremely real to the tragedy that they've faced.

I will say that you might refrain from letting your teenagers read this before you do. Yes, it's a Christian book, however, there is some content parents might not be comfortable with their children reading. Use your judgment.

I'd definitely recommend this book to those looking for a wonderfully written and moving story. And after seeing the way Lakin has with words, I'll be adding her to my must read list.

Next time I'll know. :) Klassen is a very talented writer--with more than a little backbone. She had me hooked from page one and had me reading well into the night.  I think what I like most is that she tackles issues that of that time were more than taboo and does so with grace. I thought I knew where she was going with the story and while I was partially right, she surprised me by not taking any shortcuts and making the story as real to life as she could.  I enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes great historicals with a touch of scandal. I received this book for review from the publisher.

Nancy Moser I finished Masquerade in one weekend. It's a wonderful book. I expected nothing less from this author. A long time ago I read a book by Nancy titled The Invitation. I mention that because when you read that book, or any book in the Mustard Seed series, you'll know that Nancy Moser is a gifted and special author. She doesn't just write well, she uses her God given gift to tell a story that will keep you spellbound until you finish.  Masquerade was no different. It was in some ways what I was expecting of the subject matter and time period, however, I found myself surprised by the twists and turns in this complex plot. I think you'll be satisfied with this book and hope you'll try some of Nancy's other titles too.

I graduated from high school at sixteen, college at 20, and completed my law degree when I was 27.

My writing journey started in 2005 when I decided to write my first novel. Now I have eleven books published with more on the way.

Stars in the Night was an idea that had begun to percolate in my mind. I’d written two World War II series and was actively looking for my next setting. My husband, a huge World War II history buff, and I were kicking ideas around, and I’d decided Hollywood was probably the next place for me.
